Bush speech to tackle kitchen table concerns

Tuesday, January 31, 2006 Posted: 2027 GMT (0427 HKT)

President Bush's approval ratings have been at 43 percent since mid-December, according to some polls.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- In his State of the Union speech Tuesday night, President Bush will say that "Americans always win when America leads," a White House spokesman said, offering up an optimistic agenda for the nation's challenges.

"He'll talk at length about leadership in our country -- what it means, why it's important to our security, and why it is critically important to maintain our economic leadership in the world," said Dan Bartlett, counselor to the president.

At a Cabinet meeting Monday, Bush said Americans can expect to hear him tackle issues such as health care, energy and education.

Bush spent much of Tuesday refining the speech, which begins at 9 p.m. ET.

He was upbeat when he spoke about the address after the Cabinet meeting.

"I'm looking forward to speaking to the country," he said. "We've got a lot to be proud of. We've got a lot of work to do."

But Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid said that the president has failed to become a "uniter," as he pledged after his first election victory five years ago.

"It's almost Orwellian: Everything that he's done is just the opposite of what he has said," the Nevada Democrat told CNN on Tuesday. TRUTH!!!

Reid pointed out that Bush has never vetoed a bill approved by the GOP-controlled Congress.

"We bring issues forward," he said. "It's just that the Republicans are a unitary government."

White House press secretary Scott McClellan said Bush's address will center around four new proposals, but he declined to disclose details.

However, aides said Bush will propose long-term plans to promote alternative energy sources and take on an issue his critics say he has largely ignored for five years -- the rising cost of health care.

Among the items Bush will put forward, they said, are plans to expand tax deductions for medical expenses and allowing people to put more money in tax-deductible health savings accounts, a longstanding conservative idea.

"Big companies have all the big tax advantages and breaks to provide health care," Bartlett said Monday. "But if you are mom and pop, they don't enjoy those same types of advantages, and they should." HAHAHAHA,THESE GUYS ARE PROFESSIONAL LIARS

According to administration officials familiar with the president's speech, Bush also will touch on international issues, including the war in Iraq.

Officials said Bush will cite familiar themes, pointing to successful elections, a burgeoning Iraqi security force and the need for U.S. troops to stay until their mission is complete.

Bush also will praise the other permanent members of the U.N. Security Council for their stance on Iran's nuclear ambitions. He will express his support for the Iranian people but threaten Tehran with international isolation.

Rough year

The speech comes after a rough year for the president.

Support for the war in Iraq dropped as insurgent attacks increased and American casualties climbed. A criminal investigation into the 2003 leak of a CIA agent's identity reached the White House, resulting in the indictment of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, the former top aide to Vice President Dick Cheney.

The administration's response to Hurricane Katrina was heavily criticized, fueling a slump in his approval ratings. And the signature issue of last year's State of the Union -- a wide-ranging overhaul of Social Security -- bombed in the polls, leading Bush largely to abandon the plan.

CNN/USA Today/Gallup polls have placed Bush's approval rating at 43 percent since mid-December.

David Gergen, a former adviser to presidents of both parties, said Bush is heading into Tuesday's speech with much to prove to the American public.

"Despite the strength of the economy, most people are feeling pressed," Gergen said. "And despite the president's upbeat view toward Iraq, most people are feeling it's not going well. So I think the danger is that he overstates his optimism, that he's not in touch with these underlying currents."

In addition, Republican control of Congress will be at stake in November's midterm elections. Democrats have been using the scandal surrounding high-powered lobbyist Jack Abramoff, an associate of several top GOP figures, to hammer at what they call a "culture of corruption" on Capitol Hill.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said Tuesday that the GOP needed to show voters the country is headed in the right direction.

"It is very important that the president thematically shows where we're going in terms of the vision and an agenda," the Tennessee Republican said. "And then I and my colleagues in the legislative body need to be able to follow and deliver meaningful solutions to the real challenges of the American people."

Bush also will continue his calls for Congress to renew the USA Patriot Act and make permanent the 2001 tax cuts, which McClellan said have built the foundation of an economic recovery.

McClellan argued that those tax cuts have brought in more revenue, and he blamed the rising federal deficit -- currently projected at $337 billion -- on "out-of-control spending" by Congress.

Reid expressed a different view Monday.

"The president squandered the strongest economy in the history of this country with reckless spending and irresponsible tax breaks for special interests and multimillionaires," he said.

CNN's Dana Bash and Suzanne Malveaux contributed to this report.

Pig farmer up for 27 murders
31/01/2006 11:45 - (SA)

Vancouver - Pig farmer and accused serial killer Robert William Pickton pleaded not guilty on Monday to murdering 27 sex trade workers who disappeared from Vancouver's notorious skid row over a 25 year-period.

As Canada's largest mass murder trial began, outside the court building aboriginal drummers chanted and dozens of supporters held up a fabric banner bearing the names of dozens of missing women.

Inside, Pickton, 56, stood quietly in a bullet-resistant prisoner's box as lawyers began technical arguments over evidence.

The case was being heard in a courthouse in New Westminster, a suburb of this western Canadian metropolis. Security was so tight that spectators and journalists were still lined up after the trial began waiting to pass through metal detectors.

Pickton raises, butchers pigs

The defendant arrived from jail in a convoy of sheriff's vehicles and was escorted into the court from a secure underground parking lot.

Pickton was arrested four years ago at his family's pig farm in Port Coquitlam, east of Vancouver, where he raised and butchered pigs.

Pickton was an early suspect in the disappearances over 25 years of more than 60 women, all of whom vanished from Vancouver's squalid Downtown Eastside.

The area was Canada's most impoverished neighbourhood, a place where drug dealers and sex trade workers sold their wares on the sidewalks.

Many were homeless or transient, and could disappear for months before anyone noticed them missing.

In 2001, a special police task force was formed to solve the crimes amid a growing public clamour over police and government neglect in the disappearances.

In early 2002 the task force raided the Pickton farm, and in an investigation uncovered the remains or personal effects of 31 women.

Two years later, health authorities issued a public warning that pig meat sold by Pickton might have included human remains.

Stan Lowe, spokesperson for government prosecutors, said there was no word on whether further charges would be presented. He said: "We laid 27 counts ...based on our charge assessment standard, those are the ones that have met it so far."

Peter Ritchie, head of Picktons legal defence, was quiet about the case.

The judge imposed a media blackout on the first part of the trial during which prosecutors and the defence team would argue over what evidence could be admitted in court.

Canadian judges routinely ordered such bans so that potential jury members would not hear details before the trial.

Pickton had not indicated whether he'll choose a trial by judge and jury, or judge alone.

Lowe said: "We do not want to have evidence known to a jury poll that hasn't met the scrutiny of the courts."

Clinton: Climate change is the world's biggest worry

Associated Press Writer
January 28, 2006, 2:00 PM EST
DAN PERRY

In accordance with Title 17 U.S.C. Section 107, this material is distributed without profit to those who have expressed a prior interest in receiving the included information for research and educational purposes.

DAVOS, Switzerland -- Former U.S. President Bill Clinton told corporate chieftains and political bigwigs Saturday that climate change was the world's biggest problem _ followed by global inequality and the "apparently irreconcilable" religious and cultural differences behind terrorism.

Clinton's comments provided something a freewheeling and philosophical finale _ ahead of Sunday's formal wrap-up _ to several days of high-powered discourse on the state of the world, and the mostly admiring audience seemed to hang on his every word.

"First, I worry about climate change," Clinton said in an onstage conversation with the founder of the World Economic Forum. "It's the only thing that I believe has the power to fundamentally end the march of civilization as we know it, and make a lot of the other efforts that we're making irrelevant and impossible."

Clinton called for "a serious global effort to develop a clean energy future" to avoid the onset of another ice age.

He also said the current global system "works to aggravate rather than ameliorate inequality" between and within nations _ including in the United States, where he lamented the "growing concentration of wealth at the top," alongside stagnation for the middle classes and rising poverty.

"I don't think we've found the way to promote economic and political integration in a manner that benefits the vast majority of the people in all societies and makes them feel that they are benefited by it," he said. "Voters usually see ... issues from the prism of their own experience."
Clinton won frequent enthusiastic applause _ not a common situation at the annual gathering in the Swiss Alps _ for articulating a global vision more conciliatory and inclusive than the one many of the assembled tend to associate with U.S. politics.

People around the world "basically want to know that we're on their side, that we wish them well, that we want the best for them, that we're pulling for them," he said.

Clinton called on current world leaders to seek ways of easing the "apparently irreconcilable religious and cultural differences in the world, that are manifest most stunningly in headlines about terrorist actions but really go far beyond that."

"You really can't have a global economy or a global society or a global approach to health and other things unless there is some sense of global community."

Former Australian foreign minister Gareth Evans was listening. "He's a great performer and then he's got the greatest convening power of anyone now in the world, I think, and the greatest capacity to articulate things that matter," said Evans, who now heads the International Crisis Group, a think tank.

Clinton also dispensed advice on the issues of the day.

In Iraq, he said, the United States should not "give this thing up and say it can't work," but should consider "drawing down some of our troops and reconfiguring their components, trying to increase the special forces (and) putting them in places where they're not quite as vulnerable."

Iran, he argued, must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons, and neither economic sanctions nor "any other option" should be ruled out as ways of preventing this. But he warned there would be "an enormous political price to pay if the global community ... looked like they went to force before everything else has been exhausted."

Clinton also suggested the West should be more open to eventual dialogue with Hamas, the radical Palestinian group whose election victory stunned the world this week and clouded the prospects of any resolution to the conflict with Israel.

"One of the politically correct things in American politics ... is we just don't talk to some people that we don't like, particularly if they ever killed anybody in a way that we hate," he said. "I do think that if you've got enough self-confidence in who you are and what you believe in, you ought not to be scared to talk to anybody."

"You've got to find a way to at least open doors ... and I don't see how we can do it without more contact," he said. Hamas might "acquire a greater sense of responsibility, and as they do we have to be willing to act on that."

Klaus Schwab, the forum's founder and organizer, asked Clinton to advise the next U.S. president, noting that this person might either be married to Clinton or listening in the audience _ an apparent reference to Sen. John McCain, seated in the first row along with Microsoft's Bill Gates and other invitees.

"In this world full of culturally charged issues I think we should make it clear that Senator McCain and I are not married," Clinton joked as the audience burst into laughter.
The comment earned Clinton a slap on the back from the Arizona Republican, who fought a crowd to get to the former president after the event.

"Interesting talk," said the beaming possible 2008 presidential contender. "You got us both in trouble!"

(TOM DELAY = LOL)

What Did They Say When They Were Impeaching Clinton?

From the Impeach Bush Coalition:

Tom Delay (R-TX):
"This nation sits at a crossroads. One direction points to the higher road of the rule of law. Sometimes hard, sometimes unpleasant, this path relies on truth, justice and the rigorous application of the principle that no man is above the law. Now, the other road is the path of least resistance. This is where we start making exceptions to our laws based on poll numbers and spin control. This is when we pitch the law completely overboard when the mood fits us, when we ignore the facts in order to cover up the truth.

No man is above the law, and no man is below the law. That’s the principle that we all hold very dear in this country."

Rep. Henry Hyde (R-Ill.):
"I suggest impeachment is like beauty: apparently in the eye of the beholder. But I hold a different view. And it's not a vengeful one, it's not vindictive, and it's not craven. It's just a concern for the Constitution and a high respect for the rule of law. ... as a lawyer and a legislator for most of my very long life, I have a particular reverence for our legal system. It protects the innocent, it punishes the guilty, it defends the powerless, it guards freedom, it summons the noblest instincts of the human spirit.

The rule of law protects you and it protects me from the midnight fire on our roof or the 3 a.m. knock on our door."

James Sensenbrenner: (R-WI):
"What is on trial here is the truth and the rule of law. Our failure to bring President Clinton to account for his lying under oath and preventing the courts from administering equal justice under law, will cause a cancer to be present in our society for generations. I want those parents who ask me the questions, to be able to tell their children that even if you are president of the United States, if you lie when sworn "to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth," you will face the consequences of that action, even when you don't accept the responsibility for them."

Chuck Hagel (R-NB):
"There can be no shading of right and wrong. The complicated currents that have coursed through this impeachment process are many. But after stripping away the underbrush of legal technicalities and nuance, I find that the President abused his sacred power by lying and obstructing justice. How can parents instill values and morality in their children? How can educators teach our children? How can the rule of law for every American be applied equally if we have two standards of justice in America--one for the powerful and the other for the rest of us?"

Bill Frist (R-TN):
"I will have no part in the creation of a constitutional double-standard to benefit the President. He is not above the law. If an ordinary citizen committed these crimes, he would go to jail."

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas):
"When someone is elected president, they receive the greatest gift possible from the American people, their trust. To violate that trust is to raise questions about fitness for office. My constituents often remind me that if anyone else in a position of authority -- for example, a business executive, a military officer of a professional educator -- had acted as the evidence indicates the president did, their career would be over. The rules under which President Nixon would have been tried for impeachment had he not resigned contain this statement: "The office of the president is such that it calls for a higher level of conduct than the average citizen in the United States."

Can You Imagine George Bush by Another Name? ( Umm,i don't know, well maybe, how about Shitstain , Accident , Mistake , Chump , "Satan's Rapetoy", etc...etc...etc...

by Beth Quinn

There is a courtroom scene in the movie "A Time to Kill" that comes to mind when I hear Bush fans blindly defend their president.

The movie is about the black father of a little girl who is raped, beaten and thrown off a bridge by two white men in Mississippi. Knowing that justice won't be served for a black child, her father kills her attackers and goes on trial for murder.

The scene that comes to mind these crazy days is this:

The defense attorney knows this heartbroken father is facing an all-white jury. And this jury will be incapable of putting themselves in the shoes of a black man.

So the lawyer asks them to close their eyes as he describes in excruciating detail the attack the little girl endured. "Can you see it?" he asks. "Can you see her being tortured?" And then he tells them: "Now imagine she was white."

It is a similar use of imagination that I would ask the blind faithful in Bush's camp to try.

Please, just close your eyes for a moment as I catalog the abuses George Bush has committed against our country. And then imagine he is Bill Clinton, a man you're predisposed to hate - and tell me you would still defend those actions.

When you consider that George Bush declared war in Iraq based on a lie, close your eyes and imagine it was Bill Clinton who had told that lie. Keep your eyes closed and picture it. In fairness and honesty, would you defend him?

When you consider that George Bush has been secretly and illegally spying on Americans, close your eyes and concentrate. Picture how you would react if it were Clinton wiretapping our phones. Would you defend him?

When you consider that George Bush partied for days at his Texas ranch while New Orleans was dying, close your eyes and picture Clinton partying on Martha's Vineyard. Can you see it? Can you imagine Clinton ignoring the plight of thousands of homeless and dying? Would you defend him?

When you consider that George Bush continues to promote the lie that "we do not torture" even as he declares the right to violate McCain's amendment barring torture, squeeze your eyes tight and picture it. Can you see Clinton defying the Geneva Convention and Congress? Would you defend him?

When you consider that George Bush has paid journalists to promote his propaganda, close your eyes and imagine Clinton buying off the Fourth Estate. Would you like that? Would you defend him?

When you consider that George Bush continues to send our young men and women into danger in Iraq without protective armor, then hides their coffins from the cameras when they are sent home dead, close your eyes and imagine Clinton doing such a thing. Is this a good thing? Would you defend him?

In the movie, the jurors' collective eyes pop open when the defense lawyer asks them to imagine the little victim was white. It's clear they have seen the light and justice will be done.

In real life, blind allegiance is no better than blind hatred. Both spring from fear and ignorance. It would be gratifying if the Bush defenders were to open their own eyes to see this president for what he really is.

George Bush, by any name, is nothing more than a power-mad liar.

There are 1,091 days 'til Inauguration 2009.

Al-Zawahiri threatens attack on US

Monday 30 January 2006, 21:50 Makka Time, 18:50 GMT

Al-Zawahiri said he survived the 13 January US air strike

Aljazeera has aired a new video in which al-Qaida's deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahiri calls George Bush a butcher and threatens a new attack in the US.

Monday's video was his first appearance since a US air strike that targeted him on 13 January in Pakistan.

Al-Zawahiri said he had survived the raid which he said killed "innocents".

The air strike hit a building in the eastern Pakistan village of Damadola, reportedly killing four al-Qaida leaders.

Thirteen villagers were also killed in the strike, angering many Pakistanis.

The video appeared to be recorded this month, as it mentioned a call for a truce issued by Bin Laden in an audio tape Aljazeera said was recorded in January.

"US airplanes ... launched a raid on a village in near Peshawar after Eid al-Adha in which 18 Muslim men, women and children were killed in what they call the war against terror," al-Zawahiri said.

"They said this was intended to kill myself and four brothers but now the whole world has discovered their lies ...".

Al-Zawahiri, shown wearing white robes and a white turban, said the US had ignored an offer from al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden for a truce.

"Butcher of Washington, you are not only defeated and a
liar, but also a failure. You are a curse on your own nation," he said, referring to Bush. "Bush, do you know where I am? I am among the Muslim masses," he said.

"My second message is to the American people, who are drowning in illusions. I tell you that Bush and his gang are shedding your blood and wasting your money in frustrated adventures," he said, speaking in a forceful and angry voice.

Al-Zawahiri added: "The lion of Islam, Shaikh Osama bin Laden, may God protect him, offered you a decent exit from your dilemma. But your leaders, who are keen to accumulate wealth, insist on throwing you in battles and killing your souls in Iraq and Afghanistan and - God willing - on your own land."

Exxon Mobil reports record profits

Monday January 30, 2006

Exxon Mobil today reported record profits of $10.7bn for the fourth quarter as the world's largest oil company cashed in on high energy prices.
The result surpassed Exxon's previous record of $9.9bn (£5.6bn) in the 2005 third quarter. Oil companies made big profits last year as prices surged to record highs.
Exxon is the last of the major US oil producers to report fourth quarter earnings. Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Marathon Oil and Amerada Hess all delivered profit increases last week. Hess's earnings almost doubled, and Marathon's almost tripled. Oil companies also made big profits from their refining activities. The average US profit on refining crude oil into petrol and other fuels widened to a record of almost $11 a barrel.

Exxon Mobil's annual sales are worth more than the gross domestic products of countries such as Sweden, Taiwan and Indonesia and its cash reserve is more than enough to cover the entire foreign debt of the Philippines.
VENEZUELA: World Social Forum — Chavez calls for ‘socialism or death’

by Jim McIlroy and Chris Kerr

January 29, 2006

Green Left Weekly

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez proclaimed “socialism or death” in finishing his rousing speech to a rally of around 10,000 people at the Polihedro Stadium on January 27. The rally was a feature of the Latin American section of the Sixth World Social Forum held in Caracas on January 24-29.

The forum attracted an audience of up to 100,000 people from all over Latin America and the world, to a feast of more than 2000 public meetings and seminars on themes of anti-imperialist globalisation and the struggle for a better world.

Chavez said that unlike Karl Marx, when he first issued the call for socialism in the 19th century, “we do not have much time left”. The 21st century has now come, “when the dilemma must be finally resolved”.

“Time is short. If we do not change the world now, there may be no 22nd century for humanity. Capitalism has destroyed the ecological equilibrium of the earth. It is now or never!”, Chavez declared. “We should go toward setting up a worldwide anti-imperialist movement. We have already taken steps in this direction”, Chavez told the cheering crowd. He commented that at the previous WSF in Porto Alegre in 2005, “many talks were occurring without conclusions. We are not here to waste our time. We must urgently build a new socialist movement.”

Chavez blasted the US empire. “It is the most perverse empire in history: It talks about freedom while invading and destroying other nations ... The empire is very powerful, but not infallible. This century we will bury the US empire. The empire has to face the people of Venezuela and Latin America. It has failed in Iraq already.”

He urged the audience to “imagine a world in which the US administration declares peace to the world, withdraws its forces, and uses its resources to produce medicines and food for the poor people of the world”.

Chavez contrasted the US’s record to the achievements of the Bolivarian revolution in Venezuela, with the help of Cuba, which taught 1.5 million people to read through Mission Robinson in just two years.

“Injustice and inequality are losing: it is now up to us to define the formula of unity for victory. We need unity of all our currents. While respecting the right to autonomy of the movements, including the green movement and the various political and national movements, all of us should get together in a victorious offensive against imperialism.”

Many prominent figures in the international progressive movement were featured on a podium, including Aleida Guevara (Che’s daughter) and Cindy Sheehan (US anti-war leader whose son was killed in Iraq). Huge applause greeted Chavez’s speech, and the rally included a rousing rendition of the workers’ anthem, “The Internationale”.

Chavez’s stress on the need for urgent international political action against global capitalism and oppression was a major theme of the forum. The whole conference was filled with the overwhelming influence of the Venezuelan revolution. The “Bolivarian spirit” was pervasive from the very first day, when around 20,000 activists marched to launch the WSF. The lively and colourful march featured the banners, clothing and chants of the many national contingents, especially from Latin America.
Tony Blair now raising concern that Global Warming is a real and dangerous threat

Blair: Global Warming Is Advancing

- - - - - - - - - - - -

By JILL LAWLESS Associated Press Writer

January 30,2006 | LONDON -- The threat posed by climate change may be greater than previously thought, and global warming is advancing at an unsustainable rate, Prime Minister Tony Blair said in a report published Monday.

The government-commissioned report collates evidence presented at a conference on climate change hosted by Britain's Meteorological Office last year. It says scientists now have "greater clarity and reduced uncertainty" about the impacts of climate change.

In a foreword, Blair said it was clear that "the risks of climate change may well be greater than we thought."

"It is now plain that the emission of greenhouse gases, associated with industrialization and economic growth from a world population that has increased six-fold in 200 years, is causing global warming at a rate that is unsustainable," he wrote.

Over the next century, global warming is expected to raise ocean levels, intensify storms, spread disease to new areas and shift climate zones, possibly making farmlands drier and deserts wetter.

The U.N.-backed Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says temperatures rose by about 1 degree during the 20th century. Computer modeling predicts increases of between 2.5 degrees and 10.4 degrees by the year 2100, depending on how much is dome to limit greenhouse gas emissions.

Scientists have warned of climatic "tipping points" such as the Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets melting and the Gulf Stream shutting down.

In the British report, the head of the British Antarctic Survey, Chris Rapley, warned that the huge west Antarctic ice sheet may be starting to disintegrate, an event that could raise sea levels by 16 feet.

Rapley said a previous Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report playing down worries about the ice sheet's stability should be revised.

"The last IPCC report characterized Antarctica as a slumbering giant in terms of climate change," he wrote. "I would say it is now an awakened giant. There is real concern."

Blair's vow to put climate change at the center of the international agenda during Britain's leadership of the G-8 and the European Union last year met with limited success.

He was unable to overcome the Bush administration's antipathy to the Kyoto climate-change accord -- rejected by the U.S. government on the grounds it would damage the economy. British ministers also have acknowledged that Britain is unlikely to meet its own target of cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 20 percent by 2010.

Project Censored specializes in covering the top news stories which were either ignored or downplayed by the mainstream media each year. Project Censored is a research team composed of nearly 200 university faculty, students, and community experts who review about 1,000 news story submissions for coverage, content, reliability of sources, and national significance. The top 5 stories selected are submitted to a panel of judges who then rank them in order of importance. The results are published each year in an excellent book available for purchase at most major book stores.

–Top 5 Project Censored News Stories

1. White House Erodes Open Government

While the White House has expanded its ability to keep tabs on civilians, it’s been working to curtail the ability of the public—and even Congress—to find out what the government is doing. One year ago, Rep. Henry A. Waxman, D-Calif., released an 81-page analysis of how the administration has administered the country’s major open government laws. The report found that the feds consistently “narrowed the scope and application” of the Freedom of Information Act, the Presidential Records Act and other key public-information legislation, while expanding laws blocking access to certain records—even creating new categories of “protected” information and exempting entire departments from public scrutiny. When those methods haven’t been enough, the administration has simply refused to release records—even when requested by a congressional subcommittee or the Government Accountability Office. Given the news media’s interest in safeguarding open government laws, one wonders why these findings weren’t publicized far and wide.

2. Media Coverage on Iraq: Fallujah and the Civilian Death Toll

The civilized world may well look back on the assaults on Fallujah in 2004 as examples of utter disregard for the most basic wartime rules of engagement. U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour called for an investigation into whether the Americans and their allies had engaged in “the deliberate targeting of civilians, indiscriminate and disproportionate attacks, the killing of injured persons, and the use of human shields,” among other possible “grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions” considered war crimes under federal law. More than 83 percent of Fallujah’s 300,000 residents fled the city. Men between the ages of 15 and 45 were refused safe passage, and all who remained—about 50,000—were treated as enemy combatants. Numerous sources reported that coalition forces cut off water and electricity, shot at anyone who ventured out into the open, executed families waving white flags while trying to swim across the Euphrates, shot at ambulances, and allowed corpses to rot in the streets and be eaten by dogs. Medical staff reported seeing people with melted faces and limbs, injuries consistent with the use of phosphorous bombs. But you likely know little of this as the media hardly mentioned it.

3. Distorted Election Coverage

The mainstream media largely ignored evidence that electronic voting machines were susceptible to tampering and downplayed political alliances between the machines’ manufacturers and the Bush administration. Then came Nov. 2, 2004. President Bush prevailed by 3 million votes—despite exit polls that projected John Kerry winning by a margin of 5 million. “Exit polls are highly accurate,” wrote Professor Steve Freeman of the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Organizational Dynamics in an article co-authored with statistician Josh Mitteldorf of Temple University. “They remove most of the sources of potential polling error by identifying actual voters and asking them immediately afterward who they had voted for.” The discrepancy of 8 million votes was well beyond the poll’s recognized margin of error of less than one percent. The official result deviated by more than five percent, which is considered a statistical impossibility. Freeman and Mitteldorf analyzed the data and found that “only in precincts that used old-fashioned, hand-counted paper ballots did the official count and the exit polls fall within the normal sampling margin of error.” The discrepancy between the exit polls and the official count was considerably greater in the critical swing states.

4. Surveillance Society Quietly Moves In

It’s a well-known dirty trick in the halls of government: If you want to pass unpopular legislation that you know won’t stand up to scrutiny, just wait until the public isn’t looking. That’s precisely what the White House did Dec. 13, 2003, the day American troops captured Saddam Hussein. President Bush celebrated the occasion by privately signing into law the Intelligence Authorization Act—a controversial expansion of the PATRIOT Act that included items culled from the “Domestic Security Enhancement Act of 2003,” a draft proposal that had been shelved due to a public outcry after being leaked. Specifically, the IAA allows the government to obtain an individual’s financial records without a court order. The law also makes it illegal for institutions to inform anyone that the government has requested those records, or that information has been shared with the authorities. The law also broadens the definition of “financial institution” to include insurance companies, travel and real estate agencies, stockbrokers, the U.S. Postal Service, jewelry stores, casinos, airlines, car dealerships, and any other business “whose cash transactions have a high degree of usefulness in criminal, tax or regulatory matters.” In one fell swoop, this act has decimated our rights to privacy, due process, and freedom of speech.

5. U.S. Uses Tsunami to Military Advantage in Southeast Asia

The American people reacted to the tsunami that hit the Indian Ocean last December with an outpouring of compassion and private donations. Across the nation, neighbors got together to collect food, clothing, medicine and financial contributions. The White House initially offered an embarrassingly low $15 million in aid. More importantly, the government exploited the catastrophe to its own strategic advantage. Establishing a stronger military presence in the area could help the United States keep closer tabs on China. It could also fortify an important military launching ground and help consolidate control over potentially lucrative trade routes. The United States currently operates a base out of Diego Garcia—a former British mandate about halfway between Africa and Indonesia, but the lease runs out in 2016. Consequently, in the name of relief, the U.S. revived the Utapao military base in Thailand it had used during the Vietnam War and reactivated its military cooperation agreements with Thailand and the Visiting Forces Agreement with the Philippines.

Canadian record label taking on the RIAA over lawsuits

Geoff Martin, canada.com

Published: Friday, January 27, 2006

Canada’s largest privately owned record label — which represents such homegrown successes as Avril Lavigne, the Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlan — has joined one Texas family’s fight against the Recording Industry Association of America.

Vancouver-based Nettwerk Music Group has taken up the cause of David Greubel and his family, who are being sued by the RIAA for songs they had indirectly offered through a peer-to-peer file-sharing program installed on their computer. Although the Greubels’ computer had more than 600 songs available, the RIAA is seeking damages totaling US$9,000 for the distribution of nine specific songs, including Lavigne’s hit "Sk8er Boi."

The Greubels have been told the RIAA would accept a payment of US$4,500 if it was received during a specific timeframe, but Nettwerk has convinced the family to fight the case, and has pledged to pay for all of the family’s legal fees, in addition to any fines they might receive should they lose.

“Suing music fans is not the solution, it’s the problem,” Terry McBride, C.E.O of Nettwerk Music Group, said in a statement. “Litigation is not ‘artist development.’ Litigation is a deterrent to creativity and passion and it is hurting the business I love. The current actions of the RIAA are not in my artists’ best interests.”

Nettwerk became involved with the case when Greubel’s 15-year-old daughter Elisa wrote to punk-rapper MC Lars, another of Nettwerk’s musical acts, to say that she appreciated the sentiments in “Download This Song” -- one of the tracks on his upcoming album.

The song is directed at record label executives, who MC Lars says are “stuck in 1992,” and includes lyrics such as, “Music was a product, now it is a service / Major record labels, why you trying to hurt us?”
But according to Nettwerk, Elisa Greubel’s letter to MC Lars indicated she was struck by one line in particular.

“My family is one of many seemingly randomly chosen families to be sued by the RIAA,” she wrote. “No fun. You can’t fight them, trying could possibly cost us millions. The line, ‘They sue little kids downloading hit songs’ basically sums a lot of the whole thing up.”

Thanks to Nettwerk’s intervention, the Greubels will be represented by Charles Lee Mudd Jr., a Chicago-based lawyer whose firm Mudd Law Offices has defended several of the more than 1,000 people the RIAA has subpoenaed since the first lawsuits were filed in 2003.

Mudd issued the following statement: "Since 2003 the RIAA has continually misused the court and legal system, engaging in misguided litigation tactics for the purpose of extorting settlement amounts from everyday people — parents, students, doctors, and general consumers of music. In doing so, the RIAA has misapplied existing copyright law and improperly employed its protections not as a shield, but as a sword.”
David Greubel is also thankful for the help.

"This is not right!" Greubel said. "Anyone who has been involved in the legal system knows the feeling of being forced into a position they do not believe in, simply because they did not have the resources to have their day in court. Mr. McBride has stood up, and again said, 'This is not right!' Thank God for people like him."

PEEP GAME

.......... Modern, industrialized, compulsory schooling was to make a sort of surgical incision into the prospective unity of these underclasses. Divide children by subject, by age-grading, by constant rankings on tests, and by many other more subtle means, and it was unlikely that the ignorant mass of mankind, separated in childhood, would ever re-integrate into a dangerous whole.

Inglis breaks down the purpose - the actual purpose - of modem schooling into six basic functions, any one of which is enough to curl the hair of those innocent enough to believe the three traditional goals listed earlier:

1) The adjustive or adaptive function. Schools are to establish fixed habits of reaction to authority. This, of course, precludes critical judgment completely. It also pretty much destroys the idea that useful or interesting material should be taught, because you can't test for reflexive obedience until you know whether you can make kids learn, and do, foolish and boring things.

2) The integrating function. This might well be called "the conformity function," because its intention is to make children as alike as possible. People who conform are predictable, and this is of great use to those who wish to harness and manipulate a large labor force.

3) The diagnostic and directive function. School is meant to determine each student's proper social role. This is done by logging evidence mathematically and anecdotally on cumulative records. As in "your permanent record." Yes, you do have one.

4) The differentiating function. Once their social role has been "diagnosed," children are to be sorted by role and trained only so far as their destination in the social machine merits - and not one step further. So much for making kids their personal best.

5) The selective function. This refers not to human choice at all but to Darwin's theory of natural selection as applied to what he called "the favored races." In short, the idea is to help things along by consciously attempting to improve the breeding stock. Schools are meant to tag the unfit - with poor grades, remedial placement, and other punishments - clearly enough that their peers will accept them as inferior and effectively bar them from the reproductive sweepstakes. That's what all those little humiliations from first grade onward were intended to do: wash the dirt down the drain.

6) The propaedeutic function. The societal system implied by these rules will require an elite group of caretakers. To that end, a small fraction of the kids will quietly be taught how to manage this continuing project, how to watch over and control a population deliberately dumbed down and declawed in order that government might proceed unchallenged and corporations might never want for obedient labor.

That, unfortunately, is the purpose of mandatory public education in this country........

........campaigned tirelessly for an American school system designed along the same lines. Men like George Peabody, who funded the cause of mandatory schooling throughout the South, surely understood that the Prussian system was useful in creating not only a harmless electorate and a servile labor force but also a virtual herd of mindless consumers. In time a great number of industrial titans came to recognize the enormous profits to be had by cultivating and tending just such a herd via public education, among them Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller....

......there you have it. Now you know. We don't need Karl Marx's conception of a grand warfare between the classes to see that it is in the interest of complex management, economic or political, to dumb people down, to demoralize them, to divide them from one another, and to discard them if they don't conform. Class may frame the proposition, as when Woodrow Wilson, then president of Princeton University, said the following to the New York City School Teachers Association in 1909: "We want one class of persons to have a liberal education, and we want another class of persons, a very much larger class, of necessity, in every society, to forgo the privileges of a liberal education and fit themselves to perform specific difficult manual tasks."

The Truth About the State of our Union

by Dennis J. Kucinich

On Tuesday night President Bush will stand before the Congress and the nation, to deliver his annual State of the Union address. We are sure to hear a rosy tale of an economy on the rebound, a blossoming democracy in Iraq, a terror network on the run, and a Gulf Coast region rebuilding better and stronger than ever before. As is most often the case with this Administration, the rhetoric does not match reality.

The facts are clear. Our economy is struggling and leaving tens of millions of Americans behind. According to the non-partisan National Journal, since President Bush first stood before Congress and the nation in 2001, the median income in this country has decreased, the jobless rate has jumped from 3.9% to 4.9% and the number of families living in poverty has increased from 8.7% to 10.2%. Our trade deficit has doubled. Inflation has gone up. Personal bankruptcies have gone up. Consumer debt has gone up. College tuition has gone up. And, the price of gas has gone up. All the while, this Administration has turned a $128 billion federal budget surplus into a $319 billion deficit.

Today, almost 6 million more Americans do not have any health insurance than when President Bush took office. In total, over 45.5 million Americans, or over 15% of our total population, have no health care coverage at all.

During his 2003 address, President Bush told the nation that Saddam Hussein "had biological weapons sufficient to produce over 25,000 liters of anthrax", "materials sufficient to produce more than 38,000 liters of botulinum toxin", "as much as 500 tons of sarin, mustard and VX nerve agent" and "upwards of 30,000 munitions capable of delivering chemical agents".

Today, almost three years after the start of the President's war of choice, we know Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction, had no connection to al-Qaeda and posed no threat to our nation. Yet, our armed forces are bogged down in the middle of civil war that our own generals say cannot be won by military force. Our presence in Iraq is counterproductive and has cost the lives of over 2,200 US troops and $250 billion.

President Bush has delivered four State of the Union addresses since the attacks on our nation on 9/11. In four speeches, the President has never once mentioned Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the terror attacks on this nation. The status of the FBI's most wanted man apparently is not important to the state of our union. Yet, in the same four speeches, President Bush has mentioned Saddam Hussein 24 times, and Iraq 78 times.

President Bush used the opening of his 2003 State of the Union to praise the creation of the Department of Homeland Security. This year our nation, and the world, saw the result of the failure of this massive reorganization of our government. As Katrina rolled ashore, destroying large cities and small towns in four states, it was FEMA, once an independent cabinet level agency--but now rolled into Department of Homeland Security--that failed to react. The searing image of thousands of Americans stranded without food and water dying on American streets will be the lasting legacy of the Department of Homeland Security, not a reorganized government "mobilizing against the threats of a new era" as the President described in his speech.

In his 2004 and 2005 addresses, the President spent a considerable amount of time advocating policies that would roll back much of the social progress made since the New Deal. In 2004, the President touted a Medicare prescription drug bill that will fatten the pockets of the pharmaceutical industry, endangering the future finances of the entire Medicare program, while leaving seniors confused and empty handed as they try to fill their prescriptions under the new plan. In 2005, the President used his address to promote his plan strip seniors of the guaranteed promise of Social Security, and replace it with a risky scheme to gamble their future in the stock market.

What the President has in store for his message this year is not known yet. But, we do know the President Bush will speak in glowing terms about the state of our union. The truth is the state of our union is in great peril. This Administration is conducting a war with no end in Iraq, illegally spying on Americans at home, overseeing an economy that is increasingly leaving more and more Americans behind and abandoning Gulf in their hour of great need.

If recent history is any precedent, then next week we should see more of the same old dance around reality that has been the hallmark of President Bush's annual address.

Since being elected to Congress in 1996, Kucinich has been a tireless advocate for worker rights, civil rights and human rights. He represents Ohio's 10th District.

City of Los Angeles Sues Makers Of 'Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas'
By Clarence Burke Jr.
Date: 1/27/2006 12:50 pm

The City of Los Angeles has sued the makers of popular video game "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas," claiming the company misled consumers about pornographic content in order to get the game in stores.

L.A. City Attorney Rockard Delgadillo accused Rockstar Games and parent company Take-Two Interactive Software of failing to disclose pornographic content included in the games original code, simply to sell the game in major retail outlets that do not carry games rated for adults 18+.

In July of 2005, The Entertainment Software Ratings Board changed the rating of the game from Mature (17+) to Adults Only (18+) after the questionable content was discovered.

The lawsuit demands that Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive Software return almost $10 million in profits the game made in California and stop marketing the game to under-age children.

The Federal Trade Commission is investigating advertising claims related to the game and in New York, consumers have sued the company and are seeking to file a class-action lawsuit against the companies.

In December of 2005, a group of senators in the United States introduced a bill that would outlaw the sale of violent or sexually-explicit video games to under-aged consumers.

The bill was introduced to congress after the pornographic content in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" was discovered. Senators sponsoring the bill include Hillary Rodham Clinton and Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut.

"The content of many cutting-edge games is becoming more and more vivid, violent and offensive to our most basic values," Lieberman said in a statement shortly after announcing the bill.

Since Jan. of 2006, at least 55 new bills to restrict the sale of video games were introduced to congress by various politicians.Submit News!

All Signposts Lead To Imminent Nuclear Attack In America: Intel Army Capt. Eric May Issues 'Red Alert' For Next 9 Days For Texas City-Houston Area

Capt. May claims to have broken the Illuminati and Bush Cabal's "embedded code" in an effort to beat the neocons at their own nasty game. Capt. May may have thwarted one attempted nuclear attack last July, but says the Bush Cabal is coming back again for a second try.
25 Jan 2006

By Greg Szymanski

The January air is again filled with rumblings about an imminent nuclear attack on American soil, as ominous signs are popping up all over the place indicating the "dropping of the real potato" is right around the corner.

Sources inside the military and close to the action this week warned areas of "nuclear concern" within the next 10 to 90 days include Texas City, Tex., the Houston metro area, Charleston, S.C., Los Angeles, Ca., and Kansas City, Ka.

"I am worried," said Jon Watkins of Texas City. "My family is right in the middle of it. I have asked two police officers to keep an eye out for any suspicious activity during the next 10 days.

"I also am sending a copy to the FBI of the interview I heard today on Greg Szymanski's, Investigative Journal, where his guest, Army Capt. Eric May, presented compelling evidence that a nuclear attack, created by the Bush Cabal, could very well take place on or near Jan. 31, 2006, right here in Texas City."

And From east coast to west, people like Watkins from all walks of life, including military and civilian, are coming forward with stories about "an impending disaster," most of them linking the insidious Bush Cabal pushing the "nuke buttons," not the fictitious and Illuminati-created Al Qaeda terrorists.

Going back to last August, the signs were already obvious that the Bush administration, through Cheney's direct orders to Strategic Command (STRATCOM), had specific plans to nuke Iran "if a nuclear blast occurred on American soil."

At that time, sources in the military stationed at Ft. Monroe, VA, warned how a planned nuclear test exercise scheduled for the waters around Charleston, S.C., "may go live," the leak in the military saying this probably led to the strange firing of Gen. Kevin P. Byrnes, who may have gotten wind of the backdoor military nuclear plan.

Other sources since have come forward, saying Gen. Byrnes, head of the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), was actually fired for not keeping "a better lid" on the nuclear plans, since the leaked information circulated heavily on the internet and other places drew too much attention for the Bush administration plans to go ahead with scheduled plans to "nuke its own country.

Gen. Byrnes, one of the few military four star generals ever to be fired, was replaced Oct. 13, 2005, with Gen. William S. Wallace, now heading TRADOC and any future nuclear exercises at FT. Monroe.

Regarding the Gen. Byrnes firing and the nuclear training exercises, still more sources during July and August were saying the east coast training session was not the key target area, but only a diversion for the actual nuclear attack to be carried out at the British Petroleum plant in Texas City located about 40 miles from Houston.

Although the attacks never occurred, Capt. May, who claims to have broken the Bush Cabal's complicated Illuminati "embedded code" said his infowars cyber-fighters actually may have put the "clamps" on the Texas City attack, scheduled for last July 28, due to "some quick thinking" and media alerts put out by the group he heads to take called the Ghost Troop.

"By breaking their embedded code, which uses numbers as signposts going back to 911, we predicted the timing of such a nuclear attacks to take place last year at Texas City " said Capt. May on Szymanski's Tuesday morning edition of The Investigative Journal, adding he felt the Bush administration was scared-off from pushing "the nuke button" by successfully alerting media groups, federal agencies and others in places of interest.

"I believe we thwarted the attack but they are now coming back again. The next nine days are going to be very important and Texas City could be the target and look for a Jan. 31 as the target date."

Although the breaking of the Illuminati's embedded code is rather complex, it centers around the importance of numbers 1, 3 and 9 as well as inversions and other uses of certain symbols and other number combinations and variations only known by the Illuminists themselves.

"These people in our government communicate this way and through my training as a military intelligence officer I feel I have broken their code. We have to fight back and stop them from the next nuclear attack and this is one way to beat them at their own game," said Capt. May, who once believed hook, line and sinker in the government's war on terrorism but changed his mind several years ago after events around the world, including the Spain and London bombings, convinced him they were actually being orchestrated by "the enemy within," the Bush Cabal.

"Then there was the all-important contact I had with a 911 witness, USMC Captain Jeff Cross, who opened my mind enough that I had my epiphany upon the 3/11/2004 Madrid "911," and almost overnight cracked the "embedded code."

"I'll give examples to any American who wants to learn. All they have to do is Google "Ghost Troop Bibliography" to find out just how the Bush Cabal is telling us when the next event will occur. They like to play with people's minds, feel superior when doing so and they are going to hit America with a nuclear attack. That's certain.

"The only question is when and where and if my calculations are correct, the event is not too far away. But, without question, I am prepared to die for my country in an effort to stop them and will do everything in my power to do so."

And what adds to the suspense and credibility of Capt. May's warning is another nuclear training exercise is now being planned by the Department of Defense between Jan. 31 and Feb. 2 in the Charleston, S.C. area.

The military's Joint Task Force-Civil Support, headquartered at Ft. Monroe, Va., the same unit headed by Gen. Byrnes who was fired in August, will hold a three-day drill involved in managing the consequences of a 10-megaton nuclear blast, enough to inflict mass causalities and devastation on an American city.

And just like the last August exercise, this drill focuses on a hypothetical blast that affects nearly half a million people across a 900-square mile section of tidewater South Carolina. The scenario assumes 10,000 fatalities and more than 30,000 injuries. As officials from the Department of Homeland Security, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency and senior Coast Guard brass will be in attendance.

Besides Capt. May who is sounding the "red alert" for the next 10 days for the Charleston and Texas City areas, the war drums in Iran are again pounding, as STRATCOM is still under Cheney's orders to "nuke Iran" in the event of a "terrorist attack" at home.

Not only is the nuclear attack here imminent, according to Capt. May and others, the recent Osama bin Laden tape, threatening a huge American attack, considered by many to be a fraud and orchestrated by the Bush Cabal, is another sign the American people are being psychologically prepped for a nuclear strike.

"Remember how the Bush Cabal works," added Capt. May. "Every attack has to be greater than first like sequels in a horror movie. Also remember the way they use names. First Oklahoma City, Okla., next New York City, N.Y. and what's next Texas City, Tex.?"

Besides Capt. May, the military source from Charleston, who talked last August anonymously, again when contacted this week, said "to watch out for something big in the weeks to come in the Houston, LA or Charleston area."

One other more obscure sign of an "impending disaster" is the alarming notice being put out by Bank of America officials, who in recent weeks have been secretly instructing bank managers and employees how to deal with customers in the case of a "national emergency."

And to verify this claim as well as LA being a feasible target, a Bank of America manager from Irvine, Ca., reported two weeks ago that her bank held a "workshop" where the last two days were dedicated to discussing new security measures.

According to the branch manager, the workshop included members from the Homeland Security Office who instructed employees how to field calls from customers and what they are to tell them in the event of a national disaster.

Apparently, the manager was told how only agents from Homeland Security, during such a disaster, would be in charge of opening safe deposit boxes and determining what items would be given to bank customers.

The manager then reported that she was instructed that no weapons, cash, gold, or silver will be allowed to leave the bank and only various paperwork will be given to its owners. After discussing the matter with them at length, she and the other employees were then told "not to discuss the subject with anyone."

Since speaking anonymously for fear of Homeland Security reprisals, the bank manager has recently given notice she is leaving Bank of America.

And to verify this claim, another Houston resident alerted about the California case, decided to recently question a local bank employee about any Homeland Security visits in Houston.

"I found the news alarming and decided to find out more myself," said the Houston resident wishing to remain anonymous. "On a trip to my bank here in Houston, I remarked to a young bank employee "well I guess you've been told all that stuff by the manager and the Homeland Security about what to tell your customers."

"And to my amazement, the young woman came right out and said yes she'd been through all that, then whispered to me across the counter, "But we're not supposed to talk about - I could lose my job."

Date: 1/25/2006 5:06 pm

A group of super producers that helped forge the sound of Bad Boy Entertainment into a hit factory are planning to a file a lawsuit against Sean "Diddy" Combs, alleging non-payment of publishing royalties.

Producers Clark Kent, Easy Moe Bee, Lord Finesse and others are planning to file the suit against Combs, with some of the producers claiming they haven't seen royalty statements or received payment in upwards of 10 years.

Buckwild, Carlos Broady, The Hitmen, Loon, Craig Mack, Angela Winbush and others are among the producers seeking unpaid royalties from Bad Boy Entertainment.

"This is not personal against Puff [Combs]," Lord Finesse told AllHipHop.com. "This is just a royalty and publishing situation. A lot of people didn't get paid."

The group of producers are responsible for writing and producing major Bad Boy hits like "Whoa!," "I Love the Dough," "Flava In Ya Ear," "Warning," "Get Down," "I Need a Girl," "Been Around the World," "One More Chance," "Missing You," "Born Again," "Dead Wrong," "Sky's the Limit" and many others.

Representatives for Bad Boy Entertainment and Combs did respond to requests for comment at press time.Submit News!

Joel Stein:

Warriors and wusses

I DON'T SUPPORT our troops. This is a particularly difficult opinion to have, especially if you are the kind of person who likes to put bumper stickers on his car. Supporting the troops is a position that even Calvin is unwilling to urinate on.

I'm sure I'd like the troops. They seem gutsy, young and up for anything. If you're wandering into a recruiter's office and signing up for eight years of unknown danger, I want to hang with you in Vegas.

And I've got no problem with other people — the ones who were for the Iraq war — supporting the troops. If you think invading Iraq was a good idea, then by all means, support away. Load up on those patriotic magnets and bracelets and other trinkets the Chinese are making money off of.

But I'm not for the war. And being against the war and saying you support the troops is one of the wussiest positions the pacifists have ever taken — and they're wussy by definition. It's as if the one lesson they took away from Vietnam wasn't to avoid foreign conflicts with no pressing national interest but to remember to throw a parade afterward.

Blindly lending support to our soldiers, I fear, will keep them overseas longer by giving soft acquiescence to the hawks who sent them there — and who might one day want to send them somewhere else. Trust me, a guy who thought 50.7% was a mandate isn't going to pick up on the subtleties of a parade for just service in an unjust war. He's going to be looking for funnel cake.

Besides, those little yellow ribbons aren't really for the troops. They need body armor, shorter stays and a USO show by the cast of "Laguna Beach."

The real purpose of those ribbons is to ease some of the guilt we feel for voting to send them to war and then making absolutely no sacrifices other than enduring two Wolf Blitzer shows a day. Though there should be a ribbon for that.

I understand the guilt. We know we're sending recruits to do our dirty work, and we want to seem grateful.

After we've decided that we made a mistake, we don't want to blame the soldiers who were ordered to fight. Or even our representatives, who were deceived by false intelligence. And certainly not ourselves, who failed to object to a war we barely understood.

But blaming the president is a little too easy. The truth is that people who pull triggers are ultimately responsible, whether they're following orders or not. An army of people making individual moral choices may be inefficient, but an army of people ignoring their morality is horrifying. An army of people ignoring their morality, by the way, is also Jack Abramoff's pet name for the House of Representatives.

I do sympathize with people who joined up to protect our country, especially after 9/11, and were tricked into fighting in Iraq. I get mad when I'm tricked into clicking on a pop-up ad, so I can only imagine how they feel.

But when you volunteer for the U.S. military, you pretty much know you're not going to be fending off invasions from Mexico and Canada. So you're willingly signing up to be a fighting tool of American imperialism, for better or worse. Sometimes you get lucky and get to fight ethnic genocide in Kosovo, but other times it's Vietnam.

And sometimes, for reasons I don't understand, you get to just hang out in Germany.

I know this is all easy to say for a guy who grew up with money, did well in school and hasn't so much as served on jury duty for his country. But it's really not that easy to say because anyone remotely affiliated with the military could easily beat me up, and I'm listed in the phone book.

I'm not advocating that we spit on returning veterans like they did after the Vietnam War, but we shouldn't be celebrating people for doing something we don't think was a good idea. All I'm asking is that we give our returning soldiers what they need: hospitals, pensions, mental health and a safe, immediate return. But, please, no parades.

Seriously, the traffic is insufferable.
